Indifferent media? You gotta be kidding. Gone are the days of deadpan Walter Cronkite. On all media fronts, there's plenty of emotion imparted. Whether it's local or national, it's never difficult anymore to tell whether a TV anchor or reporter is approving or disapproving -- quite often, their judgment is clearly on display, and meant to be. Same is true in print media, too. Scorn or praise, understatement to hyperbole, it all comes through.

And no, I don't mean just the wingnuts; I include the heralded "fact-based" mainstream news outlets. That's all I'm talking about, in fact -- the wingnuts don't even belong in a conversation about news media. Some mainstream outlets use voices with less of an edge to them, but hardly anybody is blameless.

Good grief.

I don't flat-out disregard those charts, but the problems come when they're held up as the big argument-winner. It's kind of like people nowadays throwing the word "science" into their arguments -- i.e. "Well, science says ...," completely ignoring the fact that within Science there are many different theories, approaches, schools of thought, etc., and naturally a lot of disagreement, too. Argument-winners are ham-handed, even rather childish. They're for people who join discussions not to explore a topic but to feel moral superiority.

The charts themselves aren't necessarily inaccurate, but the very idea of a chart presents the fallacy that the whole thing can be encapsulated, when it really just can't. And even as I see the correctness of the rankings or whatever, I still think they do more harm than good when people are discussing issues. I mean, look at what you just did: We weren't even really talking about bias -- that's been hashed out on here many, many times. I was talking about how the news is delivered -- tone, demeanor, etc., regardless of left, middle, or right -- but as soon as you felt disagreed with, out comes The Chart!
