Wish I had a chance to catch them in concert.

    The Smithereens

My college roommate, freshman year, bought one of their cassettes -- neither of us had ever heard of them before. We got to liking them and played that tape all the time.

I'd never been much of a partier in high school, but made up for lost time when I got to college. On one of the nights when I ended up worshipping the porcelain god, I knelt there singing, "The blues before and after ... I get the blues before and after lovin' you!" in between hurls. I even remember what I drank that night: About twelve Molson Canadians, with a couple of rum and cokes about halfway through the beers.

    Ah, the TGIF stories!

Funny that all the car talk is coming up, because the other day when the conversation turned to possible TGIF themes, I thought of car songs. The bands of the 50s and 60s had a million of 'em. (Plus there's this one singer, I forget his name, he had a few, too.)

My 1st car was a 1966 Buick Special - 4door with three on the column. Looked similar to this

Jeannie C. Riley was in the spotlight for quite some time.
"Harper Valley PTA" was her signature song.
Early to mid 70's, there was an absolute explosion of "country" artists. There were quite a few "one hit wonders".
Johnny Cash's brother, Tommy, was one of them. Henson Cargill also hit it pretty big with "Skip A Rope" then faded into the sunset.
Hoyt Axton (from Comanche, OK) was a "country star" but wasn't really a "big hit" artist.
C.W. McCall was a big hit during the CB craze. His "signature" hit was "Wolf Creek Pass".
Heaven only knows how many one hit wonders have a single "Truck Drivin" song on their credit.

How about Sgt Barry Sadler's "Ballad of a Green Beret"?

            Lacy J. Dalton - "16th Avenue"

Here's some lyrics from the song "16th Avenue" that ring so true!

            ______________
Ah, but then one night in some empty room
            Where no curtains ever hung
Like a miracle some golden words
            Rolled off of someone's tongue

And after years of being nothing
They're all looking right at you
And for a while they'll go in style
            On 16th Avenue

The Georgia Satellites are best known for the song “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” but I like this one better.

Was the "song🎵" the hit or was the "video 👀" the hit? LOL!

Cars and tunes just go together. I’m pretty sure we did cruising songs awhile back but may have to revisit.

                              Here's one for you fellas!

Dean Dillon* - "Hot, Country and Single"

                              https://youtu.be/L-hmAVnlXoM

Don't recognize the name or the song? I didn't!

                              * - Dean Dillon is perhaps best known for co-writing more than 70 songs recorded by George Strait.
