  • TGIF; RIP musicians edition

Kudos to MattM37 for the suggestion following Dusty Hill’s passing on Wednesday. We’ll be sure to get to ZZ Top later.

Since this is going to be a tribute thread please mention who you can, in the cases of multiple band members just do your best.

This could run long, with lots of new additions to TGIF.

Since I started TGIF’s as a flip of the bird to COVID I’m going to start this off with an appropriate tune from a guy taken by it last year.

Gentlemen, I present to you Mr. Joe Diffie.

Had a chance to see this guy a few years back but passed it up. Stupid me.

I had something a little different in mind, but you simplified it!

Here's a Red Stegall tribute to "Bob Wills".

          (1950 - 2017)

One of my favorite artists. I sing a few of his songs including that 'I Won't Back Down' - one of my personal theme songs.

Here's another I really like to sing: 'Mary Jane's Last Dance'. Of course that's Kim Basinger in the video...

            Here's the Commodores singing 'Nightshift'. It's a tribute to Marvin Gaye (1939 - 1984) and Jackie Wilson (1934 - 1984).

I've performed it just once on karaoke night. It's time to sing it again, soon...

Here's Johnny Cash (1932 - 2003), doing a cover of 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails. I consider it a tribute Johnny gave for himself in his last year of life.

I will only sing it at home and do pretty well with it. No one in a bar would want to hear it no matter how well it's performed.

              If I could start again
              A million miles away
              I would keep myself
              I would find a way

                Leonard Cohen (1934 - 2016), 'Halleujah'

This is another I sing well and consider it a tribute to Cohen. But again, it's only a song I do at home. It's a little too long and slow for anything other than a church service. As a former believer this sometimes gets me and I sing it with feeling.

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Here's my favorite Bon Scott (1946 - 1980), 'It's A Long Way To The Top'

Can't sing it no matter how hard I try...

                  Gettin' old
                  Gettin' grey
                  Gettin' ripped off
                  Underpaid
                  Gettin' sold

Yep, two for one since he did the guitar solo for Michael Jackson on this one.

We may not like things about many artists but the music can stand on its own.
