Very eerie not to have a lot of airplane traffic that close to DFW. I went back to my motel in Decatur, TX, and watched the news and saw the planes hit. I called off the inspections and went back home. No one knew what was happening for several hours.

There is a FAA control center not far from me and some Controllers live in my area. The news here was the rogue plane that was heading for Cleveland that was out of touch with the Controllers. Bits and pieces of information would make it on the local news. Then the plane over Cleveland made the U-turn heading back East with F-15's scrambled to catch up to it. The plane eventually crashed in PA.

I was working with a firm who had offices on Drexel's campus. It so happened that my younger brother was an intern there at the time and also lived just off campus.
The internet wasn't what it is now, but I recall seeing the first stories of a small airplane strike on CNN, then as the available footage had a bad angle, another story that a helicopter filming the damage also crashed into it (the camera angle showed a news chopper turn go behind the building and then another fireball) I remember thinking there's no way that chopper did that. As things became clear I remember switching to BBC because traffic on the US news sites had overwhelmed their servers.
Next was the announcements to vacate major city centers. Work shut down. My parents didn't live far from me and my brother wanted to take the train home with me so he could stay there for a day or two (which was reasonable).
Office overlooked 30th St Station. The station was mobbed out the door. Had to be tens of thousands of people trying to get on Amtrak, buses, subway, and regional rail. Told him there was no way I was getting into such a predictably crowded area in the middle of an event like this.
We went to his apartment and grabbed lunch watched it all unfold on TV, they went back to the station at around the normal rush. If I recall there was nobody in the main concourse of the station but us and Amtrack police along the walls and at entrances with a K9 or two in the mix. Staff behind counters. Dead silent. A handful of people on the platform for our train.
One thing that I did witness that is unpopular to recall and draws fire was open celebration by certain groups in the street. I'm not saying it was everywhere, and I don't think it was a majority, but it happened.
A lot of vendors in the food trucks in center city and on campus are from the ME. We're approaching one when a mini van pulls up, a bunch of guys hop out, and the staff in the truck come out and they're all jumping up and down and yelling and patting each other on the back.
My brother is not a terribly confrontational guy, but I had to grab him by the collar and pull him along. "Dude, I buy my breakfast from that guy every day! Do you believe that $h!t?!" "Yes. I do. I also believe that if you took any action there you'd be the first guy on the news accused of a hate crime and those guys would all be telling a reporter how one of them just got news of their first born son. It might even be true. Let's go."

Liberals refuse to believe it!
Trump even mentioned it during his campaign.

I was hanging vinyl siding when the homeowner, a firefighter, came out and told us what happened. We packed up our tools and went home. About 6 months later I would start my career as a firefighter/EMT. I worked with that homeowner for about 15 years until his retirement.
