    Depends on what you want to attract, I guess. I can speak to pheasants and other upland birds. You should plant food as close to good winter cover like heavy native grasses as possible. That way, birds don't have to travel far to get food, reducing their exposure to cold and predation.

      Choose level fertile ground near good cover and if possible water. All game need 3 things food, cover security from poachers and water. Provide that and the critters will come.

        One of the better places I've placed one, was a little secluded, in the middle of the woods where sunlight could reach the ground at least 5 hours out of the day.
        I bought a bag,(I forgot the name)at Dick's and it was made specifically for an area I described.
        Deer would come to it a little before the sun set, due to it being in the woods.

          It's easier to attract deer if you put your food plots some place the deer want to go anyway...The closer to bedding or feeding areas or travel routes you can get without disturbing them, the better!!!
