Go to a hardware store and look for a broom stick (Wood) or get a wooden dowel rod sized to the diameter of the gig point.

Go to the paint store or big box store and get yourself a fiberglass expanding paint pole. Mine expands from 8 to 14 feet. Easily adjustable in the field. Won't rot and light weight.

Reminds me of a story when I was a kid. We would go around to farm ponds at night and shine and gig frogs. At one new pond I spotted a nice big bullfrog a few feet out in the mud. I snuck up as close as I could and rammed the spear into him. The gig kept going into the mud, up past my hand. Of course, to get it that far down I was laying on my face in the mud. They had to drag me out by my shoes. Lost the frog and the gig. Didn't look or smell too good, either. I'd go with the long gig Beekeeper suggests.

Yup, get the expanding paint pole. Don't got cheap- the cheap ones will bend and break at the joints, for a few extra bucks the good ones will be real solid.

Make your own out of a broom stick. They have spring loaded clamps that do nicely to catch frogs, but will snap fingas in 2
