Is it croppie or crappie? I never know for sure. I thought it was croppie but...

    Where I'm from they are White Perch. Properly spelled Crappie we southerner's also pronounce it with an "A" rather than the long "o".

    I'm a fish biologist- every report, paper, or fish ID book that I have read spells it crappie.

    Croppie where I come from, same as in Merriam-Webster's dictionary. Still throws me whenever I hear someone say crappie. So how do you pronounce Rapala?

    Teufelhunden has it right. We call 'em specks too.
    Difference between a white and black crappie- its the number spines on their dorsal fin (top fin) White Crappie have 6 spines, Black has 7 or 8.
