Gary D, Yes and the magazine fired him, which, based on their target audience, was their best course of action. I would have made the same decision. But since both parties acted within their legal bounds I dont see what the controversy about the firing is. A private entity has every right to decide who represents them and one would only assume they would fire someone who contradicts them.

Guns and Ammo is more about the party line than debate. It gun nut central but I do enjoy reading it. He was let go for voicing an opinion contrary to what the business supports and probably costing them lost subscriptions which magazines can ill afford. If he wanted an open minded debate he should have written it elsewhere or held on to it for a few years when things change. Right now everybody is scared because they see the writing on the wall and stepping out of line gets you flattened by pro gun zealots. Look at what happened to other writers who did similar articles. He will have to go to an NRA opinion certification seminar if he wants to write again.

Jerry Clower (The Mouth of the Mississippi) sat in a Green Room as a guest on a talk show.
A large female guest waiting her turn spied Jerry's exotic leather boots and launched into an animal rights tirade.
When she finally finished, Jerry simply stated, "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but apparently you've been educated beyond your intelligence."

A sentiment I feel every time the Honk launches into one of his tirades! LOL!

Ncarl, I agree with you that everybody has a right to their opinion but Metcalf printed his opinion supporting more gun control in a national gun and ammo magazine that is pro second amendment.
It would be similar to writer from Playboy Magazine bashing pornography and would equally get fired with the Playboy editor who approved that story.
SD Whitetail Hunter, you made a great point about the antis using this story.

BTW, I would expect an ex-MP to misspell "Infantryman".

Metcalf was a buffoon to write a "Jim Zumbo-ish" limp wristed article in G&A. Should have published it in 'Oprah' or 'Bloomberg News'. I'm not saying whether he had a valid point or not since I did not read it (and likely won't), but falling on your sword is always a grave tactical error. New name should be "Chief Runs With Scissors".

A bunch of blind fanatics (such as the NRA) have kept the Second Amendment alive in the USA, and have even managed to make some gains in favor of firearms freedoms. Can you say the same for your beloved repressed Canada, that is so regulated, you cannot keep a handgun for self defense?

Essentially, Metcalf's blunder was to revive the argument about the prefatory clause in the second amendment ("A well regulated militia...").
That subordinate clause had been used against us since 1939 in the Miller case, and was finally dismissed as inconsequential in the Heller case in 2008, in which the principal clause ("...shall not be infringed." was held to govern.

I just finished reading the article in question, and I think it was an exercise of poor judgment for Metcalf not to foresee the reaction of the shooting public to his philosophical musings on the purpose of the Second Amendment.
Jim Bequette resigned as editor-in-chief for his role in publishing the offensive article.
The publishing industry is in hard enough times as it is without antagonizing its subscribers with such concessions to the cause of gun control.

Eh, it's a private entity firing an employee. He has every right to his opinion and they have every right to decide who they want representing them. I don't see the controversy.

If you like your current gun, you can keep your current gun, period. Nobody is going to take it away from you.

I will agree that probably 3/4 of the people who flipped out about this, did so because they heard the news report about it, which simply stated, "Guns & Ammo publishes editorial supporting gun control." Many probably didn't read the article.

What people should be more outraged over is the way the anti's will use this as fuel for the fire. Saying "even a gun mag writer knows we need more controls, blah blah.." It was poor judgement to publish that story.

That was stupid of Metcalfe to pen an article like that in a Gun magazine. Time and Place, Time and Place.
