I see Guns & Ammo has sacked Dick Metcalfe for publishing something supposedly questioning the 2nd Amendment. This is disgusting. Actually read what the guy wrote! He simply states that people who misuse guns need to be regulated. This is disgusting! Taking what someone says out of context is juvenile. The editor in chief caved in immediately to a bunch of blind fanatics. But hey, he okayed the piece or it wouldn't have been published in the first place. Shoot the infrantryman not the general.

Well I read his article in my copy of Guns and Ammo, and one think struck me right away was that I felt he was trying to make a point,(regarding gun safety) that I think is better enforced by us rather than the government, (i.e. range rules, hunter ethics, etc.). The second thing was his misinterpretation of of the "well regulated" portion of the Second Amendment, most scholars are in agreement that in the 18th century "well regulated" meant well practiced or drilled, not government rules and regulations as we look at it in the 21st century. Another thing that bothered me was that we(shooters) are always the ones giving something up, being asked to compromise, and I believe we have done enough. Colion Nior has a great take on this, via NRA news.

I will agree that probably 3/4 of the people who flipped out about this, did so because they heard the news report about it, which simply stated, "Guns & Ammo publishes editorial supporting gun control." Many probably didn't read the article.
What people should be more outraged over is the way the anti's will use this as fuel for the fire. Saying "even a gun mag writer knows we need more controls, blah blah.." It was poor judgement to publish that story.

I just finished reading the article in question, and I think it was an exercise of poor judgment for Metcalf not to foresee the reaction of the shooting public to his philosophical musings on the purpose of the Second Amendment.
Jim Bequette resigned as editor-in-chief for his role in publishing the offensive article.
The publishing industry is in hard enough times as it is without antagonizing its subscribers with such concessions to the cause of gun control.

Essentially, Metcalf's blunder was to revive the argument about the prefatory clause in the second amendment ("A well regulated militia...").
That subordinate clause had been used against us since 1939 in the Miller case, and was finally dismissed as inconsequential in the Heller case in 2008, in which the principal clause ("...shall not be infringed." was held to govern.

Honk-Honk-
A bunch of blind fanatics (such as the NRA) have kept the Second Amendment alive in the USA, and have even managed to make some gains in favor of firearms freedoms. Can you say the same for your beloved repressed Canada, that is so regulated, you cannot keep a handgun for self defense?

Metcalf was a buffoon to write a "Jim Zumbo-ish" limp wristed article in G&A. Should have published it in 'Oprah' or 'Bloomberg News'. I'm not saying whether he had a valid point or not since I did not read it (and likely won't), but falling on your sword is always a grave tactical error. New name should be "Chief Runs With Scissors".

Ncarl, I agree with you that everybody has a right to their opinion but Metcalf printed his opinion supporting more gun control in a national gun and ammo magazine that is pro second amendment.
It would be similar to writer from Playboy Magazine bashing pornography and would equally get fired with the Playboy editor who approved that story.
SD Whitetail Hunter, you made a great point about the antis using this story.
