If you want to go with others, there is a yearly canoe trip(race) that goes a considerable distance. Lots of people show up for it.
Google Old Forge, N.Y. and look for canoe race info.
Of course, you can make the route anytime if you want more solitude. Lots of the Adirondack Park 3,000,000 acres has been returned to 'forever wild', but I think along this route they have left some lean-to's
