I heard yesterday evening on the local news stations that the strong winds we experienced yesterday were caused by something called a "wake low". Strong winds of sustained 45 mph with gusts of 70 mph broke the cruise ship in the Mobile Alabama river loose from its moorings. Those same winds are also blamed for sinking a dredge in the Little Lagoon pass at Gulf Shores Alabama. I have never heard of a "wake low" before, but it came up very suddenly after a long slow rainstorm. Has anybody else heard of one and what actually causes one?

A wake low follows a squall line.
