A taxidermist is the obvious choice but if you want to learn how to mount one yourself, there are mail order courses you sign up for. Basically, you have to learn to skin the cape off the deer with a cut up the back of the neck and between the horns; then remove all meat including inside the lips, eyebrows, and ears. Then you need to pickle the hide with chemicals to lock the hair and preserve the hide, as well as flesh the glue like substance off the hide. Then you need to order eyes and head form (choose your postition) from a taxidermy supply house. You need to cut the antlers off and mount them properly on the head form and then stretch the hide over the form, sewing the incision and mouth/nostrils up with a hidden stitch. Finally, you have to pack the nose and eyes and paint them with a nice black gloss. Last but not least, you have to prop the ears, brush the fur and put mascara-like paint on the eyelashes... there you have it. It is quite doable for anyone wanting to try but you need to learn the step-by-step instructions. It is worth taking it to a taxidermist though if you don't have to do a lot of them because they will do it right the first time and your trophy will be certain to last a lifetime.
