when reading the paper I saw an add that said morel mushroom spores for sale. is there any chance you could "grow them" or should I through the ad away?

It is extremely difficult to grow morels, but it is possible. I have seen it done under laboratory conditions, but never in a DIY setting. If they could be reliably cultivated, there would be farms selling them. Save your money.
If you want to try to grow them, there are several things you can do to make an area more suitable. Adding ash and crumbled drywall and a few other things. A google search can give you some tips. This is not the same as planting a tomato garden, but it makes it much more likely that the shrooms will grow there. The spores are prevelant enough naturally that I wouldn't bother buying them, although it couldn't hurt.
