I use old broom sticks for my top water bait, blanks chuggers & spook type, I wittle the rough form out & use a dremal tool to refine & shape, to desired form. You can get hardware for most lures at Cabeleas or off of found/junk lures. I test floatation by floating in bath tub & adjust to get proper action. I think the "TRICK" is to get the paint right. I don't have an air brush, so I use canned spray paint to paint the body a solid color, such as black or green, then use a minnow dip net in a cardboard jig shaped to the lure to add "scales". Hold/tape net TIGHTLY to lure & LIGHTLY OVERSPRAY the scale color, such as silver or gold. You can add details ie.. gills, blood or eyes, by using different colors of nail polish. Seal with high gloss, poly spray. I've had fun making them & have caught a few fish using them.
