Tourney,
One of the easiest calls to build for and by anyone would be the wingbone. I have carried and used a wingbone VERY effectively for 25 years. Everyone I have made one for has cherished it. A fellow turkey hunter appreciates what it takes just to collect the bones! As a turkey hunter I would assume you have the wing bones. These calls can be made from domestic turkey wings but the bones are thin and soft and don't tune well. I have attached a link for an article that appeared in ODL about ten years ago concerning building a wing bone call. It is very detailed with pictures to help keep you out of trouble. The only thing I do different in making mine is I use the 2 part epoxy putty instead of liquid 2 part resin. The putty helps eliminate alignment problems in my opinion. http://www.customcalls.com/makeawingbonecall1.htm
Box calls are harder to build and require some ability with shop tools as do slate and glass type calls. The old fashioned Box turtle or terripin slates are somewhat easier but don't always sound that good. Here is a link to an article in F&S by Jerome Robinson from 1998 on how to build a box call. http://www.customcalls.com/makeaturkeyboxcall.htmhttp://www.customcalls.com/makeaturkeyboxcall.htm
Here is a link to an ODL article from 1997 on how to build a slate call: http://www.customcalls.com/makeaslatecall.htm
Here is a link to a decent how to on making turtle shell slate calls. http://forum.gon.com/showthread.php?p=2924049
Good Luck!
