Turkey hunting with a 20 ga?

  • #2
Depends on the load and the pattern. I started out with a 20 gauge NEF single shot with a full choke (non interchangeable), using 3" #4 shot loads.

As long as it patterns well, you should be fine.

      Blast away! Sounds good.

I would use size 5 for higher shot count in this smaller load. Just don't try to get "reachy."

If it will hold a good tight pattern you'll be fine.

My sons both used a 20 gauge to kill their first birds and it worked fine for them.

If a 20 gauge isn't enough to drop your bird I would suggest running and fast before it eats you.

I've killed two with a 20 gauge without a problem. However would recommend using 3" shells.

Test pattern your gun with different loads. My wife hunts with a 20. Her 870 and turkey choke combo likes a high brass one ounce load of #6's. It will pattern that load like a screen door, even better than the 3 inch loads. Try differnt loads to find out which is best. The 20 is definitely up to the task.

even 2 3/4 will work even a 410 as long as you got a good pattern at that range!!

That should do the trick as long as you are shooting good paterns.
