"The pump-action shotgun was invented by John Boyce and was patented by John Browning, who favored it over the earlier lever-action shotgun that Boyce had also designed." I did look some things up, the Spencer was made in 1882 and the page I found on it said "The Spencer was the first successful pump shotgun," but the above paragraph doesn't mention it...But it also doesn't give a date so it is very possible that the Spencer was the first.

Browning's first Winchester pump shotgun was introduced in 1893. The Spencer was first made in 1882.

The Winchester 1893 was designed for black powder. It was replaced by the 1897, similar to the 1893 but built to handle smokeless pressures. Perhaps Emery was saying the Winchester 1897 was the first successful modern military pump shotgun - it was probably the first "trench" gun.

Might look up the Burgess slide shotgun if you want to see an early repeater loved by law enforcement. Beautiful guns, some with hinged barrels. Company started in 1892 but Winchester bought them out in 1899.

To be quite honest and candid, I would have to google the question in order to find out the correct answer.
