We have been camping in Rocky Mountain National Park mostly the last 5 years. It's good for young kids, bathrooms always close and all. Last summer we went to the national forest for the first time, specifically Quaky Mountain on the north side of Highway 50 just west of Monarch Pass. Over in that area there are tons of good places to camp in the summer time as there are a lot of elk camp areas for the fall with flat spots for tents and fire rings, etc.

I would start on the CO DOW website and look for hunting and fishing spots, most of them have some sort of camp ground with at least pit toilets. Remeber to take your own water.

Friends hiked and camped remote areas of the Routt and said it was one of their best experiences.

If you want to fish and not be too remote, close to Steamboat Springs is Stagecoach State Park. Stagecoach Reservoir is known for rainbows, bass, and pike. Tailwaters are the Yampa River, for rainbow, cuttthroat, and brown trout. I was waste deep in the river when a nice mule deer buck in velvet crossed the river not 20 feet away.

Stay out of big camp grounds. I feel like camping in camp grounds really isn't camping. I like being alone with only 1 camping spot.

Gunnison National Forest: Tincup, Gunsite pass, all of those places are excellent. Rocky Mountain scenery is stunning.
