How many of our younger contributors even knew that at one time in America anyone could just order a rifle or shotgun from the Sears and Roebuck or Montgomery Wards mail order catalogue and they each had their own name brands?

Yep sure did... I have an uncle who has a Sears & Roebucks 12ga pump.

I've heard or the Montgomery wards guns but have never seen one

My first .22 was a bolt action from Sears and Roebuck. It had a really scary safety. If the safety was on when you pulled the trigger, it would fire when you moved the safety to the off position.

I rember going with with gramps to get field shot at "walworths the drug store" and I still use my Kmart O/U to remind me of when I started hunting!

I doubt the youngsters would know but hell just as early as the mid 70's I bought a Rem 1100 from J.C. Penny's. Lot of younger people would think I'm lying.

I'm only 15, and yep, I most certainly knew that. Before all this socialism and gun control BS, you could even buy dynamite at the local hardware store providing you were over the age of 18. You could even take your guns and knives to school and shoot/hunt after class. And guess how many school shootings happened back then. ZERO! Yes, I said zero. Zilch. Nada. None. It was unheard of. Once the good guys are not allowed to have guns, only the bad guys will. or "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns!" It's just that simple.

I think the Sears and Roebuck rifles were made by Winchester and sold under the Ted Williams brand name. I never could understand the marketing theory behind that. Just imagine Walmart selling Winchester shotguns today with the Tiger Woods brand name on them.

i actually did know that my uncle has 2 guns from sears that he got back in the day. when i found that out i thought that was pretty cool

Got a 12ga. pump from sears and roebuck that use to be my grandpas. Jim in MO, haha never would of thought you could get a gun at J.C Penny's

Good point. My first rifle was a J.C. Higgins .22 automatic. A great rifle! I also mail ordered cheap ammo for my mail order Italian 6.5mm Carcano. That was my first coyote rifle. After Kennedy was shot with one, I couldn't get ammo anymore. No more mail order. I threw that rifle away and invested in a custom Mauser and made my own ammo. I agree with hjohn. I took my pheasant gun to school with me and sat it in the corner during classes so I could pheasant hunt on the way home from school. Never heard of anyone getting shot in school until they gave up on parenting and the teachers gave up on human values.

I have a Sears .22 lever rifle, made by Marlin. These guns sell less than their manufacturer labeled counterparts - can get some real bargains on some shooters.

I have my grandpa's old J.C. Higgins Model 50 bolt action from sears and robuck. After doing some research I found that it is a mauser 98 action. But the gun still shoots great
