I recommend beagles for rabbit, pheasant, and even the occasional grouse. Mostly rabbits though.

My buddy runs his beagle for rabbits and pheasants and it does a great job at both.

The Black and Tan Coonhound will trail and tree anything that can climb a tree, including Bigfoot.

I have hunted pheasant with a poodle that did real good job, and our Greyhounds could out run and kill a coyote in the blink of an eye.
I guess lots of dogs have some degree of 'hunter' instinct. Most of my hunting though was behind a friends beagle that was a real workhorse.

Since you did not mention the quarry you'll be chasing, you may want to check out the Huckleberry Hound. Those were bred for all-around hunting and they do their best chasing on a saturday morning .

Basset hounds make great lion dogs, and treeing walkers will cork screw a rabbit right into the ground.

To run what? Fox, coons, rabbits, what? Question is too ambiguous.
