Learn to use a decent rabbit squaller. Locate some habitat--reds like a fields/forest upland mix and grays like lowland woods and swamps. Get permission. Hunt at low light or night (use a red lensed flashlight--some guys tape them to their guns. Wear camo and scent protection. Locate downwind of the habitat, with shooting lanes that understand they'll want to circle around you to get your scent. Call soft at first, then repeat louder 15 minutes later. Be the dying rabbit. Give it a half hour and move REALLY carefully when you get up. Use a 22 or a 12 gauge packing three inch #4's. Skin it well and use it worthy of the fox.

If you're after grays Johnny Stewart makes a gray fox coon fight tape that works for fox and coyotes. Don't hunt areas that you know have coyotes either because coyotes run off fox. Check your state regs because many states don't allow using light at night for calling but this is the best time to call anything. I would use a cottontail in distress if you want to go that way. Unlike coyotes you can pretty much hunt fox all day long (I am talking about the east), they tend to take naps in the mid day. Most of my fox kills were taken around 10am-3pm. Also, when using a distress call try and tone down the volume from what you would use for coyotes, even using just a squeaker will suffice.

Here in the West, I like to hunt foxes a little closer to human areas then I do coyotes. The fox's around here hang close to farm and ranches, because most of the time coyotes are getting run off by ranchers, so the foxes are safer from coyotes. I like to hunt right at dusk and into the night. A rabbit squaller does great, but so does a woodpecker in distress.

the best time to call foxes is on a calm dark night. hunt the moon phases. full moons are tough to hunt because of all the light which makes it harder to see your own light. the best moon phase to hunt is the new moon or no moon. use scent control and always look down wind that is where most of them come from. also a rabbit distress call works the best but red fox fight also works pretty well.
