In New York, the minimum to FPS to hunt with an air rifle is 750. So it has to be more then that and they have to be headshots. If they arent, those squirrels arent going down.

I kill squirrels in my yard with a Red Ryder bb gun all the time and its muzzle velocity is probably just above a baby's crawling speed. I've shot rabbits with the same gun (abeit all at about 25 yards). The reason I say it is that it doesn't take much to puncture the skin or a rabbit or squirrel. If I'm seriously hunting, I use the fastest .22 long rifle cartridge I can get. But this question has got me thinking that I might try some subsonic rounds in my .22 so I can hunt quieter.

For a clean kill a pellet gun at 875-950Fps or more
bb/guns IMO~ are to shoot tin cans not game!

I would say 1000 fps 177,but at 10 to 20 feet 800 fps would do the job. If the size of the pellet is .22 then 800 to 600 fps.

for ,22 pellet- 800fps for 177- 1000. Bbguns are crap. Inhumane to shoot a bb at game. Hollow point pellets, and high velocity.
