My Sister in the Adirondacks, wanted to buy a wolf until the breeder told her the wolf would eventually kill all the dogs in her small, 12 house hamlet. She decided not to get one.

And some of the current breeds have very short lifespans.

It's a shame the St. Johns dog was allowed to go extinct. The Labrador retriever was developed from three specimens rescued from a shipwreck off the coast of England. Besides its retrieving ability, the St. Johns dog was also noted for a pleasant disposition. Originally bred to help bring in fishing nets, the dogs often spent weeks in small boats with their masters. Good disposition was very important in those close quarters.

If there are any surviving bones their DNA could be extracted and, if in good shape, implanted in a surrogate egg. There have been rumors of doing that with the smaller Dinosaurs, putting their DNA in Turtle or Alligator eggs. So far I don't think anybody has.

I think we need a breed of dog to reliably sniff out drugs.
The current success rate is about 27% with a lot of false positives.
