Anyone got experience using decoys on bucks before or during the rut? While rattling? How effective are dekes on bucks? Worthwhile or no?

I have tried them with not the best of results. I believe you really need to have a very good buck to doe ratio in your area. You also need an abundance mature bucks. Reaction ranged from no reaction (ignored) to mild curiosity to out right fear. The decoys are cumbersome to carry and move. We did have some fun on a friends farm with a Buck that was orphaned (doe hit by car) and bottle raised. He hangs around the farm and he tried his best to kill one decoy!

I agree with Beekeeper. Plus, I am a firm believer that it will work on one buck and not another depending on their mood.

I tried it in Iowa and had some success drawing bucks in by using both a decoy and rattling. A hunter needs to have several tools in his bag, and in the right situation, this can be very effective.

Like kjflorian said it just depends on the deer. I have a decoy that you can take the antlers off and on. One morning i tried it as a buck and the deer didnt want anything to do with it. Next morning I placed it in the same spot, but as a doe and had a few bucks and does come to check it out.

They might destroy your decoy if they are feeling agressive and it deffinitely catches bucks' eyes more so than anything else.

I have tried a deke before but have not really had any luck. A small spike walked up and sniffed the doe deke but that was about it. Nothing big came in.
