I was getting ready to mount some antlers still connected to part of the skull. I noticed a perfect BB size hole in the skull. I'm not sure if this was done by a bug when the skull was drying or if it was there when the deer was alive.

That is a natural part of the skull. I believe some of the facial tissue tendons are attached there.

And bugs don't eat bone. Not until bacteria and mold have broken it down to crumbling dust.

More than likely it's a foramina, which is a opening through the skull that nerves and arteries and veins travel through. Common spots, although there are many, are the supraorbital (above the eye), infraorbital (you guessed it, below the eye)mental (mid jaw on the cheek side) and inferior alveolar (inside the lower jab, back towards the skull)

There is usually one above each eyesocket. they make a great nail hole to nail it to the plaque if you're not looking for anything fancy.
