Ok guys, I am fixing to buy a rifle and I need you guys to decide the caliber for me between a .308 and a 30-06. I hunt in the southeast in hill country and the longest shot I will ever take is about 300 yards -The Kid

.308 will be my vote for several reasons
    1. Easily accessible ammunition available in hunting, target and most importantly military surplus.
    2. If you are looking at a bolt action a .308 will be available in a short action verses the long action a 30-06 requires.
    3. New technology in powders and bullets really makes advantages that the larger case capacity that a 30-06 a moot point.
    4. Personal experience. I have take some long shots in Ks and none of my deer required a 2nd shot.

I agree with a lot in this article. My comment is, make a good first shot and the importance of a second shot declines.
