I use a H&R; single shot 12ga for whitetails. Its extremely effective with a copper solid (3 or 2-3/4). The price on these has gone up to 18 bucks for 5! Just wondering if anyone out there has used a different (less expensive) load in this gun effectively.

Nice choice. Welcome to the one shot, one kill brethren.
Don't tell anyone I said this, but plain, "old school" foster slugs work great, even out of rifled barrels. But this is with open sights and under 75 yards. All the shots at deer have been under 50. Last 2 were 35 and 40. Might as well have a bow at that point, but hey it was shotgun season in OH.
