That's kinda like asking which fishing lure works best. It all depends on the buck. I've personally had more luck w/grunting than rattling, but I know several people who would say the exact opposite.

On public land neither, with the hunting pressure that just tells'em where to avoid

Use both, and a bleat can. I've had success even on public land.

If i had to choose just one i'd go with the bleat

rattle bag with you on the ground adding thrashing in the leaves then followed before your fake fight and after with a couple scattered doe bleats.

I only rattle if a deer is far away and grunt if a deer is close so to answer your questions, yes.

I like to tie all the calls together. I prefer a set of shed for rattling over the rattle bags. I like to use several grunt calls and bleat cans. I have good luck sounding like a group of deer.

if i had to choose between the rattle bag or a grunt call i choose neither i would take my trusty doe in a can
