I want to buy my first bow and notice that they are advertised as left hand and right hand. Does left hand mean that it is for a left handed person and right hand for a right handed person?

    That would be correct.

Yep. You should definitely go to a sporting goods store that has a good bow section where a pro can set it up for you. You'll be thankful you did.

You hold a Right-Handed bow in your left-hand and a Left-Handed bow in your right.

on a right handed bow, you hold the bow itself with your right hand, and draw the string with your right hand. if you're goin to draw the string with your left hand, buy a left handed bow.

I have a left handed son that shoots a right handed bow. I tried to buy him a lefty but he felt more comfortable with a righty. I'd suggest going to a pro shop and get professional help for your first bow.
