Yes and no. A good hound will chase a house cat and you can let him tree it. However the over all scent of a coon won't be there. The best choice is to get a live coon in a live trap to train with.

I have to agree with peter you can't get any better than a dog they have speed and they have endurance.

Get a live coon and train with it like herbie said. I'm not saying it WILL NOT work, it may, but there would be no scent and it would probably make the cat a little more...stray.

probably a bad idea you wont want your hound to go after a cat during a hunt instead of a coon. bad idea to associate a cat with hunting anyway

I think this might work for treeing the animal but it doesnt give off the same scent.

Not sure on that one, but we use to use house cats to train my buddy's dogs for mountain lion and bobcat.
