Doves are small birds, requiring a dense pattern.
I would go with the number 8 shot.

I might suggest 71/2 size shot. The birds are
heavier plumed this time of year and might take
more to kill them cleanly. BC

Several thoughts. Any states have the "collared doves"?.....called feral doves(unwanted), and you can shoot as many as you want. Proper name is Eurasian Doves. They are considerably bigger doves, but not easy to ID at any distance from normal doves. Thin black band around, but not entirely, their neck, and their tails are square, and not pointed like a regular dove. I'd say 7.5 shot for all around shot, but it really depends on the distance you get shots at. Decent distances, and 8's are a good choice. I bought a case of PMC's #8 shot that are high speed, and silver coated shot. They pack a punch, and I use them for Ruff Grouse, and huns as well.

Go with the #8. Save the #5 for bigger birds...I use a #6 for pheasant. If you hit a dove square with #5, you probably won't have much left to breast out! Good luck & happy hunting!

Either use 7, 8 or 8 1/2 shot. You could also use 6 shot just in case you are hunting crows at the same time.

When I shoot them, I want them to stay shot-LOL

Tell the truth RES1956, you are getting lazy, and not only want them shot, but cleaned as well.

8's for lead shot. You might want to use 6's if your using steel.

I usually use 7 1/2 shot for doves.
