First, if your 870 has choke tubes, I'd locate a "super full" tube. There ate several good "after market" tubes that will work fine. Just be sure they're threaded for the 870.
Second, if you're shotgun shoots 3" ammo, I'd look into some good 3" ammo with number 6 or 7 1/2 shot. You'll want "hi-brass" or "hi-velocity" ammo.
Third. Your target is the turkeys neck where the feathers stop and the wattles start. This will break the neck and anchor the bird. That's why you need the smaller shot! Just one in the spine to do the job. Most of the guys on here will tell you 4's or BB's. I prefer the smaller.
Fourth. With a 20 bore, I believe I'd limit my shots to 30 yards or less.
Good luck!

Briley, Carlson, Kicks are a few good ones. I would buy a full choke and test multiple turkey rounds in your gun. I shoot Winchester Supreme #4 shot because the pattern at 40 yards is great! try different brands and shot sizes of ammo to see what works the best. Also, when you down the bird I usually walk up to it and put my boot on his neck as quickly as possible. I haven't seen this yet but my hunting partner has hit a few birds and they have gotten up and ran off never to be found again. Good luck this spring!

Find a good super full choke, or a turkey choke. The most important thing to do is pattern you gun. It will tell you what rounds work the best and what range you will be able to shoot from. Also using a 20 gauge, I would use the 3" shells, Federal makes some designed for turkey. Have fun, it may be the most addictive hunting around.

In a 20 ga I would definitely use high density #6 shot. and a full choke tube. Try different brands of ammo for the best pattern. Keep in mind Federal HD shot seems to pattern better with a more open choke due to the wadd they use. If you click my username and peruse my photo files there are many of the 68 turkeys I have taken. Most fell to a 3.5 inch 12 guage but the 20 will do if you don't shoot beyond the limits of your gun.

ive never messed with after market chokes, always shot a full. as far as ammo, out of my ten gauge i shoot 3 1/2" #4's, and out of a 12 gauge i shoot 3" #5's. my farthest turkey was 50 yards with the ten mag and a full choke, dont try that with your 20 gauge though. limit yourself to probably what, 30 yards or so?

I bought a H.S. Strut Undertaker choke for my 20ga mossberg. Works well for me. When you do get a choke, regardless of what it is, shoot differnent turkey loads through it to find the best pattern. I would say 3 in shells are the best, but some dont pattern well so when your shopping around throw a box or two of 2 3/4. And for range, try out to 40 on paper, just to see how it looks. Just remember that when a turkey steps within 40-35 yards its time to shoot, 25 yards is ideal.
