My younger brother kills lots of geese, ducks and turkeys with his 20ga, never underestimate the power of a 20ga. And my cousin has shot a lot of big deer with his 20, it can handle all game in NY. Except bears, you might want a rifle or 12ga for them.

a 20 gauge will work for ducks and geese if your choke is compatiable with steel shot or you can get a choke for steel shot. you wont have the range/amount of pelletes as a 12. also the variety of shotgun shells will be less.

Listen to Dbetzner, he's raised points maybe you haven't yet realized.

yes, your 20ga will be fine, depending on the choke. Choke constriction is very important. You will not be able to shoot as far as with a 12ga but you will still be able to kill ducks.

A properly-modified 20 gauge will be OK if ye're an expert shot.

Get some 2 1/4 oz loads.

Send the barrel to Wright's and get the competition Barrel Package (about $300) and ye need make no excuses.

Get a Briley Spectrum extended and ported stainless choke tube.

Get the forcing cone reamed at Magnaport, and it will be nearly as good as if you send it to Wright's.

Why go if your shotgun is not excellent?

Blackdog, Seems you've settled on mind over matter. A lot of what you suggest is very speculative at best.

It is all about being able to shoot, and judge range..30 yrds and on in for waterfowl using a 20 ga. because of the lack of pellets, and the pattern it throws beyond that. The best shots in the world would not take longer shots with the 20ga...that's all part of being a good shot. The biggest problem with waterfowl hunting is poor shooting, and skybusting...it causes a lot of wounded birds that fly off and die.

Blackdog, you could go buy a new shotgun for the price you would try and fix up that 20 gauge.. A twenty gauge works fine for duck and goose huntin you just have to be smart about your shots cause you have a limited range.

Yes it sure could work but you just need to be accurate and shoot at birds that are in the 20 gauge's range.
