                Deer and Pigs since 1994

                In rifles:

.22 Mag ............ pigs only, would be illegal for deer
6.5 Creedmoor.. just 1 deer and 1 pig so far
.300 Blackout ... only deer to-date, both supersonic and subsonic loads
.308 Win ........... longest successful shot at over 600 paces
                .30-06 ............... bolt and semi-autos
                .45-70 ............... single-shot
                .50 cal muzzleloader
                12 gauge with slugs

                In handguns: .45 Colt

Compound bow and crossbow as well as spear

Must confess I am a little embarrassed and therefore hesitant to submit my list of 36 firearms I have used killing big game. Actually have probably forgotten a few. I grew up in rural cattle country. No organized sports, no radio or TV. When I had time off from ranch work I hunted big game, we had that in plenty, mule deer, pronghorn and elk. Many of the old cartridges like 30-30, 32 Special or 30/40 Krag, were loaners or gifts from folks I guided or hauled out game by pack horse. They got a kick out of a small fry successful at finding big game. I read all great, old gun writers and became a gun nut and have been lucky to have hunted around the world many times. I do not play golf or tennis. The rifles I have used the most are a custom 300 Win Mag and a 416 Rigby. Yes could have gotten by with a 30-06 and a 375 H & H.

                      22-250, 243, 6mm Rem, 6.5x284, 257 Roberts, 257 Ackley Improved, 25-06, 250-3000, 25/35, 270 Win, 7mmx57, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mmSTW, 280 Rem, 30/30, 32 Special, 30-40 Krag, 30/06, 300 Win Mag, 300 H&H, 300 Rem Mag, 300 Weatherby, 338 Win Mag, 340 Weatherby, 35 Whelen 358 Norma Mag, 375 H & H, 416 Rem Mag, 416 Rigby, 470 Nitro Express , 500 Nitro Express, 500 Jeffery, 458 Win Mag, 458 Ackley Improved, . Now that's an impressive list! Thanks for sharing it Happy Miles.

The 32 Special was the first centerfire I shot as a young man. For 25 years, that 50s vintage Winchester 94 was my Dad's only centerfire rifle. He and my brother still use it when tracking down wounded deer in thick undergrowth

                          .243 win, .357 mag, .35 rem and .44 mag.

Used those and others on varmints, plus just messing around.

Was a non centerfire deer state for a long while, so bow shotgun (slugs) and muzzleloader most of my big game kills.

                          Like rifles way more.

I changed gear a lot back in the old days. Kill a deer or two and try something else.

New bow every year LOL. Now I change every couple of yrs.

But my .35 rem and .30-06 are not going anywhere. Have come to the point where stuff works good enough, no need to try other.

Not gonna be buying much from here on out. Just not needed.

A nice o/u 20 ga about all i really need and a new Citori would proly be good enough.

But if somebody were to give me a Blaser F16 Id be cool with it LOL

Still want to try a Merkel Helix. And even an old HK 770 or similar.

Of course a Number 1 w good wood could be snatched up
