          minimum caliber would be 30-06 but 338 mag would be good also.anything less then 30-06 and you'll probably be buying a new weapon after you get scared out of the woods or eaten by brown bears.sure 270 and less are good for deer but,you should carry something that will put down brown bears other wise your just a statistic in alaska (52 year resident of alaska).

            I failed to mention what I carry in alaska,and that is a win.mod 70 30-06 with a 3-9 leupold scope for deer hunting with 180 gr boattail gameking bullets,and for moose a ruger all weather stainless 338 mag with a 4-12 leupold scope shooting 225gr swift a frame reloads,it takes moose off there feet usually.I've shot brown bears,and moose with my 30-06 also and it works well.the bullets I've chosen to reload make clean holes with very little meat loss.
