      im not much on pistol hunting. but as far as penetration and knockdown i like the 357 mag.

        My preference is the .44 mag. Bullet diameter, weight and penetration.

          I've been pistol hunting deer in Illinois since it opened several years ago. I use a smith and wesson .44 magnum. It does a fantastic job. A buddy of mine used to use a .357 and traded it for a .44mag. He was not happy with the results. He is ex-cia and is proficient with a pistol so I take him at his word.

            I would be hard pressed to vote for anything other than the 44 magnum for hunting.

                  Honestly I have a ruger super blackhawk in a 44 and cant hit the broad side of a barn with it past 20 yards! I dont know if I am flinching or if its just to bad ass for me but my old man has a 357 that i find is more to my liking.

                    I'd go with the 44mag. I can hit a gallon milk jug at 100 yards with mine. I believe you get better penetration at longer ranges with sufficient energy which begins to fall off with all the others mentioned.
