Where would one start to answer such a question?

Most people get an outfitter and a guide to accompany them. Of course you need to be in shape. You'll need a rifle proven accurate over a couple hundred yards, and you'll need patience. You'll also need to be skilled at spot-and-stalk.

So far everbodys right, but they've left out Bow/Muzzle loader hunting too. Short answer is it's like deer hunting, but not.Comment

If you've never been, book a hunt, and your outfitter will tell you what you need for gear and will show you the ropes. Other options are get a friend who has experience, or just start reading and watching, and studying everything you can get your hands on about elk hunting.Comment

First thing you need to do is save up a whole bunch of Money.
Out of state Elk tags will cost you several hundreds to over a thousand dollars. If you decide to puchase a landowner tag; they will be several thousands of dollars. A decent outfitter will cost you $4000. Travel to and from location, car rental, etc.. can add up very quickly.Comment

The best weapon, for Elk Hunting the West, believe it or not, is not the biggest, fastest gun, or the fastest, quietest bow, but the best set of binoculars you can afford to buy! Spot and stalk hunting is the probably the best and most effective way of hunting not only Elk, but Mule Deer. It would be wise to be in shape and to not be afraid of the dark or walking for miles in heavy timber.Comment
