Taking an animal and taking one safely and humanely are two different things. A 30-06 has probably taken everything on the planet but for practical purpose in N. America i would say it can be used up to but not including the brown bears.

W.M.D.Bell killed over 1000 elephants with the 7x57 mauser, the 3006 is much better! Question is what won't it kill? Remember that there is many different cartridges for a reason.

More than one brownie has met his match thanks to the 30-o6. I've got a buddy who chases them with a longbow.

Your question should have been. What can I quarter and drag out after I shoot it with my 30.06 without calling in a wrecker or helo to get it out? And Wam, the answer to your question is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on steroids.

Elephant. The 30-06 is the optimum cartridge for few game animals but with an accurate shot at the appropriate range it works for anything on the planet from mice to elephants. It is one of our most versatile cartridges.
