Well yes it does both of the above, it redirects the gas that is headed out the end of the barrel (180 Degrees away from you) to about 45-90 perpendicular to the axis of the bore. since the escaping gas is no longer pushing back into your shoulder it reduces recoil around 50%. Problem is it also raises the noise level about the same amount.
