Serial #4501021. Looks like made somewhere between 1907-1908. New Haven Conn. Winchester Proof Steel.

Not enough information. Need condition, rifle or carbine, long or short wood, saddle ring? octagon or round barrel, butt plate, and probably more. Photos would be helpful, also.

A 4,000,000 serial number is very new. I have a 3 million and it is '70's.
My 2 million is 1956.
How did you measure the barrel ? The proper way is to put a small dowel in the barrel as far as it will go and mark the dowel at the end of the barrel by the front sight. Take it out and measure the distance from the dowel end to your mark. If in fact 11.25" it is too short and illegal. Don't use it . Talk to a gun smith about another barrel installed, otherwise it can't be used or owned.

According to the Madis Winchester "Dates of Manufacture" book, the rifle with that serial number was made in 1977.
I am sorry to tell you that a rifle barrel shorter than 16 inches would be illegal.

I have one from the early 80s that looks just like that. Probably $350 ballpark, just a guess.

You may not have measured the barrel length correctly.

Short wood, serial number puts it post '64, round barrel, mouse ears rear sight, no saddle ring, not worth over $200.00 in this area market. If the barrel has really been cut to 11 1/4" it is both illegal and probably worthless.

I believe the barrel was measured incorrectly,... just a hunch,

I just measured my mod. 94 30-30. Guess how many inches of barrel extend past the end of the forearm ? Yep, 11.25"

Mare's Legs are still illegal, unless they are the commercial type made that way at the factory. Did you know that Steve McQueen always carried .45-70 shells in his loops, even though his Mare's Leg was actually a .44-40? He thought the .45-70s looked "cool"!
