i was reading a magazine in school today another productive class and saw a sniper rifle remington .308 forgot the model but they said it weighed 14.25 pounds. is this true?

It was probably a Rem. 700, that had been "worked" up for a military sniper rifle. The weight sounds about right for one of those "bad boys". They'll crank one out there(1000 yds+). I believe there is an ex(?) sniper that reads this page regular, so I'd look for his response too.

Tactical rifles are generally pretty heavy for accuracy, steadiness, minimal recoil, etc.

like shane said, the extra weight comes from a bull barrel, stabilizers and recoil reducers

And for that era, it wasn't really much heavier than anything else. The M14 was 11-12 pounds if I recall.

go to your local gunshop and pick up what the promoters call a "tactical rifle" and then you will understand what these guys are talking about. But i do get where your coming from..you would think a rifle that a sniper uses expecially in war time senarios would be light weight for ease of travel and use
