I am looking at some cleaning supplies, specifically one piece rods. Can I use one rod to clean all calibers (22-250, .270, 30-30 and 20 gauge shotgun) or do I need multiple ones? Also, any recommendations on the best one piece cleaning rods? I have been browsing Brownell's and have a good idea of what I want but alway like to hear from others, thanks in advance for your suggestions.

You could probably get away with one rod but a rod for 22 cal might bend in a 30 cal barrel. Bending is a no-no because it can cause damage to the barrel internals that's why a lot of people use bore guides. I recommend one piece cleaning rods only. I have used Tipton and another brand whose name escapes me.

One piece are better. .17 uses it's own rod. .22 uses it's own rod. .30cal for the rest, although you might want a shotgun rod for that - it is a heavier rod. Take notice of length, you need long enough to clean from the action forward so that is a lot longer than the barrel length only. Also, try to standardize on a thread size for rod's end and fittings and if the rod thread is male of female.
A bore snake is also a good alternative.
Last, clean the rod frequently during use to remove any build up on the rod.
Good luck.

Good advice above. I tend to use the same rod from .22 to .375 but it wouldn't hurt to do separate if want to. One piece and NOT steel as it will damage your rifling or muzzle easily. I have aluminum but want to get a Tipton Fiberglass for better strength and even less risk to the bore.
You need a separate shotgun rod with bigger threads on the end. I enjoy my "Tico Silencio Tool" for my shotgun. Don't know if they still make them. It is a long rod covered with a soft pad from end-to-end. I just ram it down the barrel a few times after every outing or box of shells. I clean it with soap and water. Then I thoroughly clean shotguns if I am going to store them for a while.

Hey y'all
After years of using bunches of different one- piece, multiple-piece and snake-type cleaning rod devices, I've settled on the one used by our military (and recommended by my US Army Munitions Specialist daughter!). It's the flexible, sleeved, pull-through steel cable. It can't damage the bore or action, is easy to use and packs up into a tight little bundle with its tips. It works with a very wide range of calibers. I find that it does a superior cleaning job, which is the object of the exercise after all. Several highly-regarded companies, such as Otis, are producing them.

I have several differetn rods for cleaning my rifles, and they are mainly Titon's that I got from either Cabela's or Bass Pro. Another good sorce of cleaning supplies is Sinclair International. For my Shotguns, I actually made my own claning rod out of 5/8" walnut dowel rod that I drilled and tapped one end to fit brushes and swabs and put a nice comfortable ball on the other end. It works great and has lasted several years without any damage to the rod itself or my barrels.
