Thoughts on escort shotguns? Suggestions for a cheap pump for ducks? Aparently I'm not very good at buying guns.

My forty year-old 870 is failing to eject 3" empties at least a third of the time. It's a common problem and one that cannot be repaired cheaply. If you're going to look at a used gun, go with something else. Frankly, I would never buy a new gun. It's about as dumb as buying a new car. A lot more expense than what's needed.

Mr. Bourjaily- any thouguts on Winchesters SXP line? Not interested myself, just wondering if they're gaining reliability or popularity.

Phil is right (again). Nothing beats a Benelli Nova or an older Remington 870. mark this down, older 870's will be selling for more than the new ones before too long. Fit and finish is better on the older ones, except maybe the Wingmaster, same design though.

My 870 Super Magnum 3 1/2" has been used as a crutch (unloaded), submerged in salt water more than once, run over by my truck, dropped, knocked in the mud by dawgs, you name it. You will be hard pressed to wear one out.

Benelli Nova or SuperNova. Ugly but very functional guns. Otherwise I am with Dakotaman: find a 3-inch 870 from about 20-30 years ago.

Ducks aren't real fussy about what they are shot with. Most shotguns make it fun. The Escort shotguns look OK in the pictures but I don't know about their reliability etc. The pumps are under $400 so they might be a possibility for you if you like the feel and the quality.

If you are just getting started and want a cheap shotgun, a good choice is to get a used Rem 870 or Mossberg 500. There are tons of them out there and they work great in the most rugged of duck hunting conditions (many don't). If you have an issue with one, you can get replacement parts anywhere or throw it away and buy another for less than you will pay for most new shotguns. I would get a 3" chamber and one that supports choke tubes if possible but that isn't a showstopper. 3 1/2" chamber is nice if you hunt geese and turkeys but it won't affect your take home limit on ducks much over the 3" at all. I will use 3" in some duck situations but usually just use standard shells to save my shoulder. They work fine. If you need a camo job, you can do it yourself with online camo packages.

For a pump check out the NEF shotgun. It is a little heavy but a good value for the $$$. It also can use some of the 870 accessories, but not the barrels. I think it is 3 1/2" as well.
