Just out of curiosity, can you put an AR upper with a rifle length gas system on a lower with a carbine length buffer? This may sound like an idiotic question to some of you guys but I don't have much experience or knowledge about firearm parts.

The bolt carrier is what goes back into the buffer tube when the action cycles, and being that both the rifle length upper and the carbine length upper are the same calibre, the bolt carrier should be the same length on both of them, because the only difference between the uppers is the length of the barrel, handguard, and gas tube.

So in short, I believe you could put a rifle length upper on your lower without a problem.
