Past a certain point (an individual choice), Practically speaking, a long barrel provides a good sight radius for accurate shooting, but too long a barrel can be unwieldy. I would not recommend a barrel longer than 6.5 inches, such as the Ruger Single-Six or a 6-inch barrel on a double-action revolver such as the S&W Model 17, for the simple reason that you would probably want to holster the piece. However, you can enjoy excellent results with a 4-inch barrel if you prefer that barrel length, and I do not consider a 4-inch tube a disadvantage. In summary, a four, five or six-inch barrel makes sense to me. The only exception that leaps to mind is the Thompson-Center "Contender" or "Encore" (with a 10-inch barrel) because the receiver with attached 10-inch barrel is about the same length as a revolver with a 6-inch barrel, and the T-C is a gratifyingly accurate handgun.

I use the same setup as Coop just mentioned and have a lot of fun with it and yea it is a bit more challenging. For carry I bought an Uncle Mike's holster. It's plenty long enough yet it secures the pistol nicely. Federal copper plated hp's shoot fantastic.
