Just bought a Savage Axis .223 bolt action. Im about to purchase some ammo. Any of you guys have this gun and what ammo do you run through it that gives you the best results? Grain, etc? I plan on doing predator hunting with it, with as minimal fur damage as possible. Thanks

I have that same gun, love it! When I was able to buy ammo, I used american eagle (winchester) 50 grain. Although I cant personally say how it damages the hide. I picked up some PMC bullets in 55 grain, and have a great grouping at 100 yards.

Congratulations on your new rifle! I load my own but I shoot 50g Hornady V-Max bullets because they are the most accurate I have found among the many that I tried. Their 40g bullets are excellent too and just as accurate. My brother shoots them but I think I get a little more range with the 50s. They are both fast enough for varmints but the 40s really smoke at 3800 fps.

They don't damage pelts, especially the 40s. They disintegrate inside a coyote body almost all the time. I shot a fox a few weeks ago with a 50g at 200 yards and it made an exit hole but I had to search for the entrance hole and the exit was about the diameter of the bullet. I have had the 50s explode within a coyote many a time but they often penetrate too... never any pelt damage though.

The 55g and up never shot as accurately for me in a 9 twist like the Axis barrel. Good luck on finding any kind of ammo but I'd recommend looking for ammo with the Hornady V-Max bullets. Then try the various sizes and take the ammo that shoots best in your rifle.
