I shot a woodchuck at just a hair over 270 yards with a Remington 700 ADL in .243 cal. with a 12x Leupold. I had never shot that far before, and since I was eating the 'chucks at the time,I always went for head shots.I was just outside of Dansville NY.

I shoot at ranges out to 1000 yards quite often with my custom .300 Dakota. I shoot prairie dogs at that range and so far the best five shot group I've gotten while practicing at 1000 is 3.5 inches with Berger 210g bullets. Hitting a four inch target at that range is getting much easier as I practice (as long as I know the actual distance to the target and wind so I can set my scope correctly).
Getting an accurate distance read on p-dogs has been a problem for me but I just got a new range finder and I think that will really help. At ranges of 600-1000 yards, the bullets are dropping so fast, you really need a very accurate distance measurement or you don't have a chance.
I shoot out to 600 yards regularly with my Rem 700 Sendero in 25-06. I shoot p-dogs with that out to about 600 yards. I have just recently started shooting longer range hunting shots and took an antelope at 500 yards with that rifle in 2011 (didn't win a tag last year). That was a pretty easy shot since I had been shooting lots of p-dogs at that range and beyond the days prior to my hunt. An antelope looks really big at that range compared to a p-dog.
My shooting range has steel gongs at each interval out to 500 meters (542 yards) and I get lots of practice running through them quickly with several of my rifles. One of my most accurate is my .223 Bushmaster Varminter. It takes less than a minute to put a nice group in each of them. That is great practice for everyday coyote and fox shooting.

We were required to qualify at 200, 300 and 500 yards with the M1 Garand and M14 rifles and I enjoyed that experience, but I've rarely taken a shot as a hunter or varminter at greater than 300 yards, simply because the ranches and properties where I hunt have fences or boundaries (and my lights are dimming at this point in life!).
