Actually, should it chamber and fire, the smaller round would allow gas to escape around it, how much I am not sure. Enough could let your round stop still in the barrel, most likely it would "spitball" out.

The closest I've seen (done) is use .30 Tokarev ammo in a .30 Mauser barrel. It was a worn barrel, and .30 Tokarev is the tiniest bit smaller. The rounds literally went "ptui".

Don't do it. The brass would fireform to the 30 cal chamber possibly splitting the neck. The loose fitting bullet would allow gas to esape around the sides. The bullet would rattle down the bore at reduced velocity banging on the barrel walls. Bullets are softer than barrel steel so I doubt the barrel would be damaged but I sure as heck wouldn't risk my barrel to find out. The bullet would not be stabilized and would tumble right after exit from the barrel. Again Don't do it.
