Interesting idduckhntr,
Wherein the hell do you see in any reloading book using large magnum rifle primers for 45-70 and telling this individual this without warning them to reduce their powder charge by at least 3 to 4 grains and work back up pending on the type of powder used.
The 45-70 is not the cartridge to be pulling this kind of crap with due to the maximum chamber pressure being much lower than 30-06!!!
If anything to blow up a 45-70, this is it!!!!!!
There are powders you must stay within the reloading manual guide lines for minimum and maximum powder charges and other components used due to serious pressure increases!
Max recommended chamber pressure for
45-70 trap door 25’000 CUP
45-70 for the Marlin Model 1895 40,000cup
45-70 for the Ruger #1 50,000cup
ware as the 30-06 is 58’000cup and other magnums run up into 64’000cup.

The CCI 250 Magnum is just a tad over the Federal 210 Large Rifle Primer and that is why Speer listed it.
CCI primers are not as hot as the other brand of primers so please keep that in mind.
For example when I started to use Winchester 760 Ball in my 25-06, I used CCI 200 and every other shot was a hang fire, so I switched to Winchester, Federal and Remington and never had problem since then. I have run into other shooters with the same exact problem.
I’m sorry if I came after you the way I did, but you got to remember the results I’ve witnessed both in the field and on the range.

A beginner needs to throughly read and study a manual such as the Hornady Handbook prior to taking up reloading. Get the newest edition. I was self taught decades ago simply because I did not know any reloaders. Luckily I used some common sense because I was afraid of problems. Don't "hot rod" your loads and work out an organized system. Ask questions if in doubt. We'll do our best to help you.

Back in 86 when I found I was going to Alaska I started to buy a 45-70 instead I bought a 444 Marlin. Reloading for the 45-70 is probably the most cautious cartridge I know of due to make and model you have. Examples of max loads are below for using what I’ve found to be common load throughout the loading data I’ve found and I will list the Reloading Book, Rifle and the Primers used. Please note, depending on the fire arm used the load is different as to whom did the research and development of that load. Also notice the reloading data for the Ruger #1, this fire arm you can “HOT ROD”!!! Bill Ruger owner of Ruger Firearms tried to blow up a 45-70 Ruger #3. The stock was busted in 3 places and melted the casing in the chamber! But I don’t think I would even go there!!!

In all honesty it seems you might want to find an older gentleman with all his fingers to show you how to reload. You may laugh but you are working with propellants and explosives. Those are good calibers that you typically dont get second chances with. And yes, I have all my fingers as of now.
