I've still got a Weaver 4x on my 740 '06 too Kw5902. You can't go wrong with the old Woodsmaster. Mine has never jammed, or have i had a FTF or a FTE.

I also own a 742 that is over thrity years old. Being only 28 myself I hope to hand it down to my kids someday. Just minor maintance stuff and the 742 is more reliable then most new guns!

I have one that my Dad wants to sell. It is in mint condition. I can forward pictures if you like. It was made in 1955 and my grandfather had it and used it very little.

I have a 740 30'06 I inherited from my dad, passed down from my grandfather (his dad, obviously). I shot two (an 8 pt and 6 pt) this past season with it. This gun has been used to put down many, many deer over the past 50 years. I have left it as is (no new synthetic stocks, no new var. high power scope), just the old Weaver 4x on it. Excellent gun-and priceless to me.

When I was younger several guys at hunting camp down south had well worn M-740's. I was always told that the 742 was more accurate, seems it had something to do with the barrel to action arrangement, not sure. Anyway the 740's looked more substancial to me than the later versions and numbers but most likely this was an impression based on appearance only. I have not seem one in years.

If you are asking about a 742 Woodsmaster then yes my Grandfather carried one for about 30 years. What would you like to know?
